WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Fairfield University baseball team ran into a hot Indiana University squad, falling to the Hoosiers, 8-0, in RussMatt action at Chain of Lakes Stadium this afternoon.
The Hoosiers (10-3), who checked into the
Baseball America poll at No. 24, took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Indiana added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning on a pair of infield singles and extended its lead to 5-0 in the third inning. The Hoosiers added one more run in the sixth for the 6-0 advantage and scored twice more in the seventh.
In the top of the ninth, Indiana walked the bases loaded with two outs setting up the Stags for a potential big inning but closer Sully Stadler was able to get the final out of the game.
Freshman
Aaron Howell made his first collegiate start for Fairfield, throwing two innings and allowing four runs on five hits with a strikeout. Freshman
Tim Duggan threw three innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Junior
Christian Fox checked in for 1.2 innings of work while
Andrew VanEyck tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless and hitless relief, striking out two batters.
Indiana's Will Coursen-Carr (1-0) picked up the win, going 6.1 innings, scattering four hits while striking out four batters.
Senior
Jack Giannini went 1-for-3 on the day, extending his on-base streak to 24 games. Junior
Ryan Plourde was 1-for-3 with a walk while
Mike Bennett was 1-for-2 with a walk. Junior
Rob LoPinto also had a hit.
Fairfield (3-7) will begin a four-game series at Stetson University on Friday, March 15 at 3pm. The Stags will return to the Northeast on March 19 to face St. John's University in Queens, N.Y. Fairfield is slated to begin league play, March 23-24, by hosting Siena College at Alumni Diamond.
