WINTER HAVEN, Fla.  –
The Fairfield University baseball team opened play at the RussMatt Tournament with a tough 4-2 loss to Illinois State University this afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park.
 
Illinois State (5-7) jumped out to an early lead after a four-run second inning. The Stags got on the board in the top of the third inning on an RBI double by sophomore Dean Sadik. In the top of the fourth inning, Ryan Plourde led off with a triple and then scored on a single by senior Jack Giannini.
 
Sophomore Tucker Panciera picked up the loss, going 1.2 innings, allowing four runs on two hits and four walks. Sophomore Anthony DiMauro threw a perfect 1.1 innings of relief while freshman Mike Wallace went 4.0 scoreless innings, scattering two hits and two walks. Freshman Tim Duggan threw an inning of scoreless relief as well.
