But, just 18 seconds later, a three-pointer by Vazquez ignited a 16-2 run for the Stags over the next six minutes of action. A lay-up by the Griffs' Brooke Angelos at 1:59 ended an 8:23 scoring drought for Canisius but the Griffs still trailed 30-20 at the break. It is the seventh time this season in which Fairfield has held an opponent to 20 points or less in the first half. Fairfield shot 60.9 percent in the first half, connecting on 14-of-23 shots while Canisius shot just 28.1 percent (9-for-32).
Fairfield started the second half with two three-pointers from Vazquez and
Katelyn Linney to take a 36-20 advantage. Canisius (10-17; 7-9 MAAC) cut into the deficit late, pulling within 56-45 on a pair of free throws by Ashley Durham with just over four minutes to play. Durham later pulled the Griffs within 49-58 with a lay-up at 2:12 but free throws by Schatzlein returned it to double digits. Durham again made it single digits, hitting a three-pointer at 1:16 to make the score 63-54. That's as close as the Griffs would get as the Stags held them off for the victory despite not hitting a field goal in the final 4:48. All of the Stags' final 13 points of the game came off of free throws.
Fairfield shot 52.1 percent (25-for-48) from the floor on the day while holding Canisius to 30.6 percent (19-for-62) from the field. The Stags also out-rebounded the Griffs, 37-33.
Fairfield closes out MAAC road play on March 1 at Loyola University Maryland. The Stags finish the regular season on March 3 when they host Marist College at 2pm in Alumni Hall. Prior to tip-off, Fairfield will honor its senior class in a special ceremony.
