FARMVILLE, Va. – The Fairfield University baseball team suffered its first loss of the season falling at Longwood University, 12-4, in the series final this afternoon at Bolding Stadium. The Stags (2-1) had 15 hits on the day but the Lancers (2-2) took advantage of five Fairfield errors to come away with the win.
Five Stags had multi-hit days, including senior
Anthony Hajjar who went 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Junior
Ryan Plourde and sophomore
Sebastian Salvo each went 3-for-5 with a RBI. Freshman
Keith Skinner and senior
Jack Giannini each went 2-for-4. Giannini, who extended his on-base streak to 17 games, had a run scored and one batted in.
Longwood took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning but Fairfield tied it up in the top of the third. Junior
Rob LoPinto led off with a double and later scored on a single by Plourde. With the bases loaded and no outs, Salvo singled to right field to plate Hajjar. Lancers starter Blake Ream retired the next three Stags to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Lancers capitalized on a pair of Fairfield errors and pushed four runs across the plate for the 6-2 advantage. Longwood added another run in the fourth inning and broke it open in the sixth with a four-run effort. The Stags got two of the runs back in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Giannini and Skinner.
Travis Burnette (1-0) picked up the win for Longwood, throwing 3.0 innings of relief in which he gave up two runs on four hits. Sophomore
Jeremy Soule took the loss, after allowing seven runs, two earned, on nine hits in 3.2 innings.
Three Stags pitchers made their collegiate debuts. Freshman
Mike Wallace tossed 2.1 innings of relief, allowing four runs, only one of them earned, with two strikeouts. Freshman
Tim Duggan tossed an inning of scoreless relief while sophomore
Anthony DiMauro went an inning, allowing one run on one hit.
Fairfield returns to Virginia next weekend when the Stags travel to George Mason University for a three-game series.
