Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y.  –
Junior Alexys Vazquez scored 20 points while Katie Cizynski posted her second-straight double-double to power the Fairfield University women's basketball team to a 55-50 victory over Manhattan College this evening in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action. The Stags improve to 14-9 overall and 8-4 in the MAAC to remain in second place in the league standings.

Vazquez notched her second 20-point game of the season after an impressive night shooting. The guard went 7-for-10 from the floor and 6-for-9 from three-point land, just one shy of her single-game record. Cizynski, meanwhile, recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Cizynski also went 7-for-10 from the floor.

Vazquez was nearly unstoppable from beyond the arc in the first half, hitting four of the six three-pointers she attempted. The Stags trailed by two early when Vazquez drained a three-pointer to ignite a 21-5 run over a span of six and a half minutes which put the Stags on top 23-9. The Jaspers did outscore the Stags 12-5 in the final six minutes of the half, but Fairfield went into the break with a comfortable 34-23 lead.

Manhattan (6-17; 3-9 MAAC) picked up where it left off in the first half, opening the second stanza with a 14-3 run over the first five minutes to tie the game, 37-37. Senior Brittany MacFarlane stopped the run with a lay-up while Cizynski returned the lead to Fairfield with a lay-up of her own. Vazquez made it a six-point game with a jumper at 8:52. Vazquez later capped off the Stags' 15-2 run with back-to-back three-pointers to make the score 52-39 with 3:58 left to play. Manhattan used another big run and cut the deficit to 55-50 in the closing seconds but Fairfield came away with the win.

MacFarlane finished with five points, four rebounds, and three steals. Senior Katelyn Linney added seven points and moved into 16th all-time on Fairfield's career scoring chart with 1,211 points which surpasses Holli Tapley.

Fairfield shot 40 percent from beyond the arc, hitting 10 three-pointers, two shy of the single game record set earlier this season.
