FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball will take its first road trip of the season when it heads to a familiar foe in Loyola University on Saturday night. The game will be televised live on MASN , TCN-Philadelphia, as well as tape delay on SNY. The tape delay telecast begins at 1 pm on Sunday, November 17.
Fairfield and Loyola will meet as non-conference opponents for the first time since the 1981-82 season. The two teams met as part of Fairfield University's Banker Classic tournament in Alumni Hall. The programs did not square off again until Loyola joined the MAAC for the 1989-90 season. Fairfield won both non-conference meetings with Loyola, the first resulting in a 100-89 decision in 1977-78, the most points scored by the two teams combined in the series history.
Loyola enters this weekend's game with a 2-0 record which includes an overtime win at Cornell last Sunday. The Greyhounds received 34 points from Dylon Cormier in the victory, his second straight 30-point performance. The guard netted 31 markers in the team's win over Binghamton in the season opener. Loyola will play its home opener this evening after playing a pair on the road. Cormier is the team's top scorer with a 32.5 scoring average, and also leads the team with 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per contest. Jarred Jones is the team's other double-digit scorer with 17.5 points every forty minutes. He has been the most accurate shooter on the team with a .636 field goal percentage. Eric Laster has been especially accurate from three-point range, making four of five jumpers from behind the line this year.
Fairfield fell to the University of Hartford at Webster Bank Arena on Wednesday night, as the Hawks posted a 63-53 win. The decision sends the Stags on the road for the first time with a 1-1 overall record. Freshman K.J. Rose has shown consistency through the first two games, leading the team with 14 points against Hartford and adding nine points versus Sacred Heart. The guard has played 27.5 minutes per game off the bench, which is second only to Maurice Barrow's 35 minutes per game. Barrow is the team's top rebounder at 7.5 rebounds per game. The senior posted nine rebounds in the opener before settling on six for the Hartford game.
The Stags lead the MAAC in several defensive categories heading into the weekend. The Stags are number one in scoring defense, allowing 58.5 points per game, and tops in defensive rebound percentage (60 defensive rebounds, 19 offensive rebounds for a percentage of .759). Fairfield is also tied for the top spot in blocked shots with 6.0 per game, but its 12 total blocks are the most in the conference.
After Saturday's contest, the Stags will play another game at Webster Bank Arena when they host the College of the Holy Cross on November 20. The game is Take A Kid To A Game Day.
