Men's Soccer Posts Overtime Win Over Long Island U

Box Score
BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Tim West scored two minutes into the first overtime to complete the Fairfield University soccer team's come back as the Stags posted a 2-1 victory over Long Island University on the road. The team improved to 3-1 overall and posted its second straight win.

Both teams had opportunities in the first half, but the goalkeepers kept the game scoreless by turning away those opportunities. Fairfield had an excellent chance in the 37th minute when Reco McLaren broke free for a direct shot at goal, but LIU's John Connolly made the save. A minute later, the Blackbirds broke through when Rob Schroback crossed the ball into the box where Jakeem Johnson finished with a header that made the score 1-0.

The Stags did not get the equalizer until the 79th minute when McLaren was able to complete a scoring chance with a header off an errant loose ball that tied the game at 1-1. Both teams were able to create an opportunity in the last 10 minutes, but neither attempt found the back of the net.

The game came to an end when West split a pair of defenders on the right side and sent a shot past the goalkeeper for the 2-1 decision.

Fairfield returns to action on Saturday, September 15 when the team hosts Northeastern University at Lessing Field. The game time is slated for 7 pm.
