FAIRFIELD, Conn.
– The Fairfield University field hockey team came out with vengeance against Yale University after their opening weekend and defeated the Bulldogs, 4-0.  The outing was the Stag's third victory against Yale since the '84 season and their first shutout against the program.

The game began with Yale taking the ball up the field to Fairfield's goal, but Maddy Sposito who had nine saves on the day, made her first.  The Stags bounced back and dominated play for the majority of the half.  The first goal for Fairfield came at the 6:02 mark on a penalty stroke by Felicitas Heinen.  Immediately following, the Stags regained control of the ball and Hillary Fitts set up Lindsey Hatch for her first goal of the season to put Fairfield up, 2-0.  Just three minutes later, Heinen once again put the ball past Yale goalkeeper Emily Cain on a penalty stroke to put the Stags up 3-0.  Yale had the opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the 17th minute, but junior Georgia Holland missed wide.

Fairfield started the second half similar to the first, with a goal in the first ten minutes of the period.  Hatch had her second goal of the game after a remarkable steal, putting the Stags up 4-0, the biggest lead and most goals Fairfield has ever scored against Yale.  Fairfield's defense held off the Bulldogs until the last three minutes of the game, when Yale got six shots off.  Sposito was able to make two saves and sophomore Valerie Buurma had a defensive save to end the game.

The Stags (1-2 overall) will close out Labor Day weekend on Sunday at 2p.m. at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.Y.  Monmouth is 0-3 thus far having dropped games to Syracuse, Hofstra, and Rutgers.
