FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Senior
Brett Shulick threw a complete game to help the Fairfield University baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Rider University this afternoon in the series finale at Alumni Diamond.
Shulick (3-3) went the distance, scattering seven hits while striking out four batters over nine innings. He retired 15 of the final 17 batters he faced, including eight straight to end the game.
Rider (11-21; 4-5 MAAC) got on the board in the top of the first. Leadoff man Brandon Cotten singled, stole second base, and then scored on a Nick Crescenzo single. Fairfield responded in the bottom of the second as sophomore
Ryan Plourde led off with a triple and then scored on a wild pitch.
Shulick kept the Broncs off the board while Rider's Kurt Sowa held the Stags scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. With one out, rookie
Sebastian Salvo reached on a ground-rule double while
Dean Sadik followed with a single. With two outs, senior
Larry Cornelia sliced a ball through the right side allowing Salvo to score the go-ahead run. Pinch hitter
Mike Bennett then roped a double to left field to plate Sadik and give the Stags the 3-1 lead.
Sowa (2-3) took the loss, going 6.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six batters.
Fairfield (12-19; 3-6 MAAC) returns to action on Wednesday, April 11 as the Stags travel to Yale University for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30pm.
