FAIRFIELD, Conn. –
The Fairfield University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Rider University this afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The Broncs took the first game, 5-3, after ninth-inning rally and carried the momentum in the nightcap, posting an 11-1 win.

In the first game, Fairfield (11-9; 2-6 MAAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Meanwhile, Stags starter Scott Warwick mowed down the first 11 batters he faced. With two outs in the fourth inning, Rider's Ian Lindsay drew a walk and later came around to score on a single by Greg Fazio. Rider (9-20; 4-4 MAAC) tied it up in the top of the fifth inning.

Fairfield pulled ahead, 3-2, in the bottom of the eighth inning as Ryan Plourde scored on a Rider error. The Broncs tied it in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI single by Lindsay and scored two more runs on a ground rule double off the bat of Jerry Mulderig for the 5-3 lead. Mulderig then took to the hill to retire the Stags in order in the bottom of the ninth for his first save of the year.

Warwick (2-3) took the loss, after being charged with five unearned runs and three hits while fanning six batters. Rookie Andrew Gallagher tossed a scoreless inning of relief. Mike Murphy (2-3) picked up the win after allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits in 8.0 innings.

In the second game, Rider took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and scored four runs in the top of the second to pull ahead 5-0. The Broncs added two runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh for the 11-0 advantage.

Rider starter Tyler Smith (2-1) took a one-hit shutout into the sixth inning. With one out, pinch hitter Mike Bennett walked while Anthony Hajjar and Plourde followed with singles.  The Stags finally scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Brian Murphy which plated Bennett.

Smith scattered four hits and struck out six batters for the complete game victory. Junior Mark Bordonaro took the loss after allowing five runs, two earned, on three hits.

Mulderig was a combined 4-for-8 with five RBI for the Broncs.
