Baseball Hosts Canisius This Weekend

The Stags, winners of seven of their last nine, continue their eight-game home stand a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series against Canisius College this weekend. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28 at 12pm.

Fairfield (18-21; 6-6 MAAC) vs. Canisius (22-21; 8-4 MAAC): After winning the first game of the series, 4-3, last season, Fairfield was edged in the next two (7-6; 1-0) to lose the series in Buffalo, N.Y. Junior Mark Bordonaro has a 2.25 ERA with two saves in three career appearances against the Golden Griffins. Junior Anthony Hajjar is a career .353 hitter against Canisius with four runs and three RBI while Tyler Wosleger bats .375 against the Griffs. Canisius has taken 12 of the 15 meetings yet Fairfield is 22-20 all-time against them.

Griffs Gossip: Canisius was last in action on Tuesday, when the Griffs scored 10 consecutive runs en route to a 10-6 win over the University of Akron at Canal Park in Ohio. Five Golden Griffins had multi-hit games to help Canisius to its 22nd win of the year. Jimmy Luppens is batting .367 to lead the Griffs while Drew Pettit is hitting .327 with a team-high 34 RBI. Jose Torralba is batting .304 with 13 stolen bases and 34 runs scored. Chris Gruarin has scored the played 42 times and stolen 11 bases and not been caught. Pitcher Garrett Cortright is 4-5 on the season with a 4.20 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 64.1 innings while Devon Stewart is 3-2 on the year with a 4.26 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 63.1 innings. Billy Martin is 4-3 on the year with a 5.14 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 48.1 innings.

Last Time Out: Fairfield had its four-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday when the Stags were edged by Stony Brook University, 6-4, at Alumni Diamond. Junior Jack Giannini was 2-for-4 on the day with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Anthony Hajjar was 2-for-5 bringing his on-base streak to 13 games while Ryan Plourde was 1-for-2 with three walks and a run scored.

MAAC Pitcher of the Week: Senior Brett Shulick was named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week on April 23 after a masterful performance in the Stags' 13-1 victory over Niagara University on Sunday. The right hander scattered three hits and struck out a season-high seven batters in 8.0 shutout innings. Shulick, who needed just 76 pitches for his fourth victory of the year, did not walk a batter or allow an extra base hit during his outing. Shulick flirted with a perfect game through 4.2 innings, retiring the first 14 batters of the game.

Up Next: Fairfield hosts Central Connecticut State on May 1. The Stags then welcome Manhattan College, May 5-6, for a three-game MAAC series.
