NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. –
The Fairfield University baseball team completed the series sweep at Niagara University taking both games of a doubleheader on Sal Maglie Field this afternoon. Fairfield took the opener, 4-2, in extra innings as rookie Sal Ciccone drove in the game-winning run. The Stags then rolled over the Purple Eagles, 13-1, in the nightcap behind a masterful pitching performance by senior Brett Shulick. With the victories, Fairfield evens its record to 6-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and 17-20 overall.

Shulick (4-3) threw eight shutout innings, scattering just three hits while fanning seven batters in the win. He flirted with a perfect game, retiring the first 14 batters he faced until Jon Wilson's two-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning broke it up. Shulick, who did not walk a batter or allow an extra base hit, allowed just two base runners the rest of his outing.

Fairfield's offense helped Shulick's cause. The Stags jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a double by Larry Cornelia. An RBI single by Cornelia in the third made it 3-0 while Anthony Hajjar gave Fairfield a four-run advantage in the fourth with an RBI single of his own. The Stags added two more runs in the fifth and extended their lead to 10-0 with a four-run seventh inning. Fairfield posted three additional runs in the top of the eighth for a commanding 13-0 lead. The Purple Eagles finally scored in the bottom of the ninth getting to reliever Gavin McCullough.

In the opener, Niagara (15-21; 5-9 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but Fairfield tied it up in the fourth on an RBI single by Mark Skrapits. The Stags went on top 2-1 in the top of the seventh as Alex Witkus reached on an error to lead off the frame and later scored on a wild pitch. The Purple Eagles tied it up in the bottom half of the inning as Wynton Bernard scored on a wild pitch to force extra innings.

The Stags offense clicked in the top of the 10th inning. Tyler Wosleger led off with a single and the next batter, Giannini, was hit by a pitch. After a successful sac bunt by Sebastian Salvo, Skrapits was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Ciccone came through with a single through the right side to drive in the go-ahead run. Cornelia added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2. Niagara threatened in their last at-bat by junior Mark Bordonaro held the Purple Eagles off for the victory.

Bordonaro (3-4) threw 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, scattering three hits while striking out two batters. Senior Scott Warwick got the no-decision despite scattering two runs on four hits and striking out five in 6.1 innings of work. Niagara starter Drew Fittry also received a no-decision after he allowed one run on five hits in 5.0 innings. Geoff Soja (2-5) got the loss, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out four in 2.2 innings.

Giannini was a combined 3-for-7 on the day with two runs scored and one driven in while Hajjar was 3-for-8 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Fairfield returns to action on April 24 when it faces Sacred Heart University at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Stags return home to Alumni Diamond on April 25 to host Stony Brook University at 3:30pm which kicks off an eight-game home stand.
