NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – After rain delayed the start of the game be more than four hours, the Fairfield University baseball team remained ready, downing Niagara University, 3-1, this afternoon at Sal Maglie Field.
The delayed start and inclement weather, however, forced the postponement of the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The two teams will now play a doubleheader tomorrow, April 22, beginning at 11am.
Rookie
Alex Witkus returned to the lineup after missing the last 25 games and went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in. Senior
Tyler Wosleger went 2-for-4 with a runs scored and a stolen base.
Rookie
EJ Ashworth improved to 3-4 on the season after going 7.2 innings and holding Niagara to one run on eight hits while striking out three batters. Junior
Mark Bordonaro notched his second save of the year by tossing the final 1.1 innings and allowing just one hit.
Fairfield (15-20; 4-6 MAAC) took advantage of a pair of Niagara errors in the top of the third inning. With one out,
Sal Ciccone and
Larry Cornelia reached on consecutive miscues by the Purple Eagles. Witkus then put the Stags on the board with a two-run single to left field.
Niagara (15-19; 5-7 MAAC) got one of the runs back in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Eric Hinc. Fairfield countered in the top of the fourth as Wosleger bunted for base hit to lead off the inning. Wosleger then stole second base and scored on a throwing error by Niagara on a groundball off the bat of
Sebastian Salvo.
The Purple Eagles threatened in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, but Bordonaro was able to shut the door on Niagara by striking out Adam Wagner to end the game.
Joel Klock (1-2) took the loss, giving up three unearned runs on seven hits and two walks in 7.0 innings of work.
