FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The University of Connecticut baseball team came from behind to defeat host Fairfield University, 13-8, this afternoon on Alumni Diamond. The two teams combined for 21 runs, 32 hits, and five errors in a game that last just over three hours.
Sophomore
Ryan Plourde went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Stags while senior
Tyler Wosleger and junior
Anthony Hajjar each went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Rookie second baseman
Sal Ciccone drove in two runs and was strong defensively, helping Fairfield turn two of its three double plays on the day.
Fairfield (14-20) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Wosleger double to left field and then scored on a single by Hajjar.
Jack Giannini drove in the Stags second run with a ground ball to second base. UConn (21-16) tied it up in the top of the second, pushing two runs across the plate.
In the bottom of the third, the Stags plated five runs to pull out to the 7-2 advantage. The Huskies scored once in the fourth and again in the fifth to cut the gap to 7-4. Fairfield got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Ciccone which made it 8-4.
UConn rallied in the top of the six, scoring four runs. Down 8-6 with two outs, the Huskies took advantage of a Fairfield error, scoring two runs to tie the game. UConn took a 9-8 lead in the top of the seventh on a solo homer by Tom Verdi. The Huskies broke it open in the top of the eighth with a four-run effort.
David Mahoney (1-0) picked up the win for UConn, throwing 3.1 innings scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit.
Mark Bordonaro (2-4) took the loss. Rookie
Jeremy Soule received the no-decision for the Stags, after he scattered three runs in 3.2 innings.
Fairfield resumes Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play April 21-22 as the Stags travel to Niagara University.
