JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Fairfield University baseball team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader to Saint Peter's College this afternoon at Jaroschak Field. The Peacocks posted a 2-1 walk-off win in the opener before topping the Stags 5-1 in the second game.
Saint Peter's (10-18; 2-1 MAAC) rallied in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 2-1 victory in the first game of the day. Senior
Brett Shulick took a two-hit shutout into the final inning of play but Chris Grimes led off with a single. Grimes then came around to score on a Brian Schroeder single. With two on and two outs, Matt Speckmann single up the middle to plate Schroeder and give the Peacocks the win.
The Stags took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning as
Billy Zolga led off with a single to center and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by
Sal Ciccone. Shulick, meanwhile, gave up a hit in the second inning and then retired the next 10 batters he faced until William Rawson doubled with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
Shulick (2-3) went 6.2 innings and allowed just two runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Matthew Yuhas (3-3) picked up the win after allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
In the second game, the Peacocks opened up a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Stags tied the game in the top of the third inning as
Larry Cornelia scored from third on a ground ball off the bat of
Ryan Plourde.
Saint Peter's put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning and added another run in the sixth to jump out to the 4-1 lead. The Peacocks scored their final run in the seventh inning.
Scott Warwick (2-2)
took the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Matt Mancini (3-1) picked up the win scattering one run on five hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Fairfield (10-17; 2-4 MAAC) returns to action on April 3 when they host Fordham University at 3:30pm on Alumni Diamond. The Stags resume league play over Easter weekend against Rider University.
