FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University baseball team was edged by St. John's University, 6-4, this afternoon in the Stags' home opener at Alumni Diamond. Freshman

Mark Skrapits each had multi-hit days for the Stags.
Salvo went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored while Skrapits went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
St. John's (4-6) got on the board in the top of the first inning as Pat Talbut scored on a balk with two outs. The Red Storm added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning on a two-RBI single by Matt Wessinger and on a wild pitch late in the inning to take a 4-0 advantage.
Fairfield (4-6) broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Salvo led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Skrapits. Rookie
Billy Zolga then roped a single to centerfield to drive in Salvo and Skrapits. But, St. John's starter Brendan Lobban was able to hold off Fairfield and preserve the 4-2 lead.
The Red Storm added another run in the top of the sixth but the Stags got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single by Salvo which plated
Anthony Hajjar. The Red Storm's Anthony Iacomini made the score 6-3 in the top of the ninth with a solo home run to right field.
In the bottom of the ninth, Skrapits led off with a double and advanced to third on a ground out. Pinch hitter
Jack Giannini followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Skrapits. Reliever James Lomangino retired the next batter to secure the win for St. John's.
Lobban (1-1) picked up the win for St. John's going 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Freshman
EJ Ashworth took the loss despite a solid effort on the mound. He allowed one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts over 4.0 innings of work.
Fairfield heads to Florida for eight games in nine days. The Stags kick things off on March 10 against the University of Pennsylvania in Winter Haven, Fla.
