NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University baseball team dropped their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener at Iona College, 5-2, this afternoon at Salesian Field.
Iona (8-12; 1-0 MAAC) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Joe Smith and an RBI single by Bobby Vitulano.
Fairfield (7-13; 0-1 MAAC) tied it up in the top of the seventh. Senior
Tyler Wosleger led off with a double and scored on a triple by rookie
Billy Zolga. The Stags struck again as Zolga trotted home on a passed ball.
The Gaels answered in the bottom of the seventh, taking a 3-2 lead on an RBI double by Chris Burke. Iona added two more runs on a home run by James Beck. Fairfield put two runners on with two outs in the top of the ninth but Iona's Derrick Bligh was able to close the door on the Stags with a strikeout.
Brett Shulick fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing four runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work. Eddie Macaluso (2-3) notched the win, going 7.0 and scattering two runs, one earned, on three hits.
Fairfield concludes the series with Iona tomorrow, March 24, in a doubleheader beginning at 12pm.
