NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Central Connecticut State University scored two runs in the ninth inning to overtake the Fairfield University baseball team, 6-5, this afternoon at CCSU Baseball Field.
Freshman
Billy Zolga went 2-for-3 with a triple and a home run and scored three times for the Stags. Senior
Tyler Wosleger drove in two runs.
Fairfield (7-12) took a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning. The Blue Devils' AJ Lowers reached on an error to lead off the inning while Josh Ingham followed with a walk. Bobby Migliazza bunted for a base hit to load the bases for CCSU. With one out, the Stags committed their second error of the inning and allowed CCSU to tie the game. Reliever
Andrew Gallagher got JP Sportman to foul out, but Ingham tagged, raced home from third, and slid under the tag to give the Blue Devils the 6-5 win.
Fairfield erased a 3-0 Central Connecticut (8-7) lead. The Stags got on the board in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by
Sebastian Salvo. With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Wosleger tied the game with a single to left field which plated Zolga and
Jack Giannini. Salvo came around to score on a fielder's choice to give Fairfield the 4-3 lead.
The Stags added another run in the top of the eighth on a solo shot by Zolga but the Blue Devils got the run back on an RBI double by Anthony Turgeon.
Freshman
Jeremy Soule received the no-decision, going 5.0 innings and scattering three runs on five hits. Freshman
Ian Tresser was charged with two unearned runs in the ninth for his second loss of the season.
Brendyn Karinchak (2-0) got the win after retiring all three batters he faced in the top of the ninth. Jesse Frawley got the no-decision, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing five runs on three hits.
Fairfield opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play against Iona College. The series dates were altered this afternoon because of potential inclement weather over the weekend. The Stags and the Gaels will play a single game on Friday, March 23 followed by a doubleheader at 12pm on Saturday, March 24.
