NEWARK, Del. – The Fairfield University baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Delaware this afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. Fairfield pitchers
Brett Shulick and
Mark Bordonaro combined for a four-hit shutout in the opener as the Stags won 4-0. In the night cap, Delaware pulled out a 4-1 win.
Sophomore
Ryan Plourde went a combined 4-for-7 on the day with a run scored and an RBI.
In the first game, Shulick and Bordonaro did not allow a single Blue Hen beyond first base over the course of the seven-inning contest. Shulick (1-0) fanned six batters and scattered three hits and two walks over 6.0 innings of work. Bordonaro tossed the final inning allowing one hit.
Offensively, the Stags had nine hits in the opening game, including a 3-for-3 effort by Plourde. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the sixth inning, freshman
Ryan Donovan came through with a single down the right field line to score Plourde and
Anthony Hajjar. The Stags added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by
Tyler Wosleger and on a wild pitch. Delaware's Corey Crispell (0-1) was charged with four runs, two earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings in the loss.
In the second game, Fairfield took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as
Larry Cornelia reached on error to start the game and later scored on a single by Plourde. Delaware starter Eric Young shut down Fairfield after the first inning, allowing just two Stags to reach between over the next six innings. Wosleger went 2-for-4 against Young.
The Blue Hens, meanwhile, pushed two runs across the plate in the bottom of the third to overtake the Stags, 2-1. Delaware added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to the 4-1 win.
Young (2-0) went the distance for Delaware, striking out seven and scattering five hits over 9.0 innings. Rookie
Jeremy Soule took the loss for the Stags, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings. Freshman
Ian Tresser threw two innings of relief, allowing just one hit while striking out four batters. Sophomore
Andrew VanEyck retired all three batters his faced in the eighth inning.
Fairfield (4-3) and Delaware (3-6) continue the series tomorrow, March 3, with a single game at 12pm. The two teams will play the final game on Sunday.
