JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Fairfield University baseball team wrapped up competition at the Wingate Invitational with a tough 5-4 loss to Jacksonville University this evening at John Sessions Stadium.
Fairfield (7-11) pounded out 13 hits on the night but left 12 on base. The Dolphins (10-11) had just eight hits on the night, but scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come from behind and tip the Stags.
Senior
Larry Cornelia went 4-for-5 with a run scored and one batted in.
Tyler Wosleger went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Anthony Hajjar and
Ryan Plourde also added two hits apiece.
Fairfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Cornelia and Wosleger scored on a Jacksonville throwing error. Cornelia made it 3-0 in the top of the second with an RBI single which scored rookie
Dean Sadik.
Jacksonville got two of the runs back in the bottom of the third inning but the Stags pushed their lead to 4-2 in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Hajjar.
The Dolphins rallied in the seventh inning. With two on and nobody out, Dan Gulbransen pulled Jacksonville within 4-3 with a sacrifice fly. A sacrifice fly by Chris Anderson two batters later tied the game 4-4. Jake Huxtable then gave Jacksonville the 5-4 lead with an RBI single.
The Stags threatened in the top of the ninth as
Sebastian Salvo led off with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt by
Mike Bennett. Pinch running for Salvo,
Jack Giannini advanced to third base on a passed ball. With two outs, Jacksonville reliever Nolan Peterson hit the back stop with a high pitch and Giannini broke for home plate. Patrick Long was able corral the ball and flipped it to Peterson who tagged out Giannini to end the game.
Peterson (1-0) posted the win after throwing 3.1 scoreless innings and striking out three batters. Fairfield starter
Scott Warwick received the no-decision after a solid outing in which he scattered two run on five hits in 5.0 innings. Freshman
EJ Ashworth took the loss after being charged with three runs in the seventh.
Fairfield returns to action on March 21 when it travels to Central Connecticut State University. The Stags open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play March 24-25 at Iona College.
