JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Fairfield University baseball team fell to Western Carolina University 10-3 this afternoon at the Wingate Invitational at John Sessions Stadium.
Senior
Tyler Wosleger went 2-for-4 for the Stags while
Mike Bennett drove in two runs.
Fairfield (7-10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Bennett reached on a fielder's choice which allowed
Larry Cornelia to score from third. Western Carolina answered in the bottom half of the inning with four runs.
Western Carolina (14-5) extended its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the third and took an 8-1 advantage after a two-run fifth inning. The Stags cut the gap to 8-3 in the top of the sixth inning as Bennett singled home Wosleger while
Billy Zolga recorded a sacrifice fly which plated
Ryan Plourde. Western Carolina scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Senior
Gavin McCullough took the loss after allowing eight runs, six earned, on seven hits and five walks in 4.0 innings.
Kyle Capaldo threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, striking out three batters and scattering two hits.
Jeremy Null (3-0) picked up the win after going 6.0 innings and giving up just three runs, two earned on six hits while striking out six batters.
The Stags finish their stay at the Wingate Invitational at 6:30pm against Jacksonville.
