JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore
Ryan Plourde drove in four runs and scored three times to help power the Fairfield University baseball team to a 9-3 victory over Jacksonville University in the Wingate Invitational this afternoon at John Sessions Stadium.
Plourde was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles while junior
Anthony Hajjar went 3-for-6 with three runs scored. Freshmen
Sal Ciccone and
Dean Sadik each picked up a pair of hits while
Ryan Donovan scored two runs.
Senior
Brett Shulick improved to 2-1 on the year after scattering three runs on four hits while striking out two batters over 7.0 innings. Freshman
Ian Tresser tossed two scoreless innings, allowing two hits.
Fairfield (7-9) got on the board in the top of the third inning. With no outs,
Larry Cornelia, Tyler Wosleger, and Hajjar posted back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Plourde cleared them with a double to right center to put the Stags on top 3-0. Donovan later made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly.
The Stags added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning on bases loaded double by rookie
Sebastian Salvo. Fairfield pushed its lead to 9-0 in the top of the sixth inning on RBI singles by Plourde and Donovan.
Shulick held Jacksonville (9-10) scoreless until the seventh inning when Adam Brett Walker hit a three-run home run with one out. The Stags got out of the inning and allowed just three base runners the rest of the game.
Fairfield returns to action tomorrow, March 18, at the Wingate Invitational with a game against Western Carolina at 2pm followed by a rematch with Jacksonville at 6:30pm. The Stags' game against the Dolphins will be aired live on
