WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Fairfield University baseball team downed the University of Maine 8-4 this afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park. Sophomore
Ryan Plourde drove in four runs for the Stags.
Fairfield (5-7) pounded out 10 hits on the day. Plourde went 2-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI, and two runs scored.
Mike Bennett went 2-for-4 with two RBI while
Tyler Wosleger went 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Freshman
Sal Ciccone went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Senior
Scott Warwick improved to 1-1 on the season after scattering three hits and striking out five batters in 6.0 innings of work. Jeffrey Gibbs (0-3) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in 6.0 innings.
Both Warwick and Gibbs were sharp through six innings holding their opponents scoreless. The Fairfield bats came alive in the seventh inning. With two runners on, Plourde doubled home Wosleger to put the Stags ahead 1-0. Junior
Anthony Hajjar advanced to third on the play and then scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman
Sebastian Salvo. Bennett followed with an RBI single to give Fairfield the 3-0 advantage.
Maine (5-8) got one of the runs back in the bottom of the seventh, but the Stags broke it open in the eighth in with five-run inning. With the bases loaded, Plourde cleared them with a double. He later scored on an RBI single by Bennett to push Fairfield's lead to 7-1. The Stags added their final run of the frame on a balk by Maine's Manny Pupo.
The Black Bears scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull within, 8-3. Maine added a final run in the bottom of the ninth but it was not enough.
Fairfield continues action in Florida on Monday against Bradley University at Chain of Lakes Park.
