AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Fairfield University baseball team opened its stay in Florida with a tough 7-3 loss to the University of Pennsylvania at Lake Myrtle Park.
Mike Bennett went 3-for-3 for the Stags.
Penn (3-4) got the scoring started in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Matt McKinnon. The Quakers added three more runs in the top of the second and pulled out to a 5-3 lead in the top of the fourth.
The Stags (4-7) answered in the bottom of the fifth inning by pushing three runs across the plate. With two outs,
Mark Skrapits reached on an error while Bennett followed with a single.
Rob LoPinto doubled down the right field line to plate Skrapits.
Larry Cornelia then singled to deep center to score Bennett and LoPinto and pull the Stags within 5-3.
Penn got one of the runs back in the sixth inning and added its final run in the ninth.
Brett Shulick (1-1) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 5.1 innings.
Andrew Gallagher tossed 2.2 innings for scoreless relief, scattering two hits. Penn's Matt Gotschall (1-1) notched the win after allowing three unearned runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Fairfield returns to action on Sunday, March 11 against the University of Maine.
