FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sophomore Alexys Vazquez tied a career-high with 17 points, knocking down five three-pointers to power the surging Fairfield University women's basketball team to a 61-44 victory over Saint Peter's College this afternoon at Alumni Hall.
 
The Stags, winners of seven-straight contests and 15 of their last 17, improve to 18-5 overall this season and to 11-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with today's victory.
 
Vazquez, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, knocked down five of her six three-point attempts and finished the day 6-for-7 from the floor. On the season, Vazquez is shooting 50 percent (50-for-100) from three-point range.
 
Senior Desiree Pina was also in double figures for the Stags, netting 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting while handing out three assists.
 
Consecutive three-pointers by Vazquez in the opening two minutes of the game set the tone early for the Stags. Fairfield rolled out to a 19-9 lead over Saint Peter's. The Stags took their largest lead of the half, 31-13, with 22.2 seconds left after a Brittany Obi-Tabot lay-in.
 
Fairfield held an opponent to under 20 points in the first half for the second consecutive game and the ninth time this season. Saint Peter's 13 first-half points tied a season low; Fairfield held Columbia University to 13 points back on December 8.
 
The Stags, who improved to 8-0 at Alumni Hall this season, maintained at least a 14-point lead throughout the second half.
 
Junior Laura Vetra finished with six points and five rebounds while Obi-Tabot chipped in with four points. Freshman Felicia DaCruz tallied a career-high six points.
 
The Stags shot 47.7 percent from the floor, including a 41.2 percent clip from three-point range. The Peahens shot 27.9 percent for the game and held a 43-35 advantage in rebounds.
 
Fairfield plays five of its final six regular season contests on the road beginning with a stop at Marist College on February 10.
