Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short As Baseball Is Topp

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. –
The Fairfield University baseball team had its ninth inning rally fall short as the Stags dropped a non-league contest at Fordham University, 5-3 on a brisk afternoon at Houlihan Park.

Trailing 5-1 in the ninth, senior Larry Cornelia started the inning off with a single. Cornelia came around to score on a two-out single by senior Tyler Wosleger. Senior Nick Piccirillo followed with a single of his own. A fielding error on a ball off the bat of Mark Skrapits allowed Wosleger to cross the plate and pull the Stags within 5-3. Fairfield had the tying run at the plate, but Fordham reliever Jeremy Adel was able to hold off the Stags.

Cornelia went 3-for-4 on the day with two runs scored and two stolen bases for Fairfield.

Fordham (2-5) had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by Ryan Lee and Mike Mauri. Fairfield got one of the runs back in the top of the fourth as Cornelia led off with a single, stole second, and came around to score on an error.

The Rams' Ryan Maghini led the sixth inning off with a solo homerun. Fordham would score another run in the bottom of the seventh and another in the eighth on a solo homer by David Judisky.

Freshman EJ Ashworth took the loss in his first collegiate start after allowing two runs on two hits while striking out three batters in 3.0 innings of work. Kyle Capaldo tossed two scoreless innings of relief allowing just one hit while striking three batters.

Fordham's Daniel Munday picked up the win after going 8.2 innings and scattering three runs, one earned on five hits and a walk while striking out eight batters. Adel got the save after getting the final out of the game.

Fairfield (3-2) returns to action March 2-4 with a four-game series at the University of Delaware.
