KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The Fairfield University baseball team finished out its stay at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium with an 11-1 victory over Youngstown State University on Sunday afternoon. Four Stags combined to take a no-hitter into the ninth inning.
Fairfield (3-1) got on the board in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by
Sebastian Salvo which plated
Anthony Hajjar. Salvo made it 2-0 in the top of the third scoring on a single to right field by
Ryan Plourde Youngstown (0-6) pushed its first run across the play in the bottom half of the third inning as Jason Shirley scored on a field's choice.
Fairfield broke it open in the top of the sixth inning by tacking five runs on the board.
Larry Cornelia drove in two runs on a bases loaded single to left field and later scored on a throwing error.
Nick Piccirillo added two more runs with a double down the right field line. The Stags added two more runs in the top of the seventh and two more in the top of the ninth.
Cornelia and Piccirillo drove in four runs apiece. Cornelia was 2-for-6 on the day while Piccirillo went 2-for-3. Hajjar went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Plourde went 2-for-4 with a walk.
Youngstown State, while drawing nine walks on the day, did not get a hit until the top of the ninth when Phil Lipari led off with a single.
In his first collegiate start, freshman
Jeremy Soule went 4.1 innings allowing just one run on no hits and seven walks. Freshman
Andrew Gallagher got the win after going 1.2 innings with a strikeout and two walks. Freshman
Ian Tresser retired all six batters he faced, striking out three. Sophomore
Andrew VanEyck tossed the final inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
