The Fairfield University women's basketball team lost its fourth consecutive game, falling to host Saint Joseph's University, 51-38, this afternoon at the 21st Annual Hawk Classic at Hagan Arena.
 
Junior Brittany Obi-Tabot had seven points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Senior Laura Vetra set career-highs with eight rebounds and three blocks while posting four points.
 
Junior Christelle Akon-Akech, freshman Christa Scognamiglio, and junior transfer Casey Grace had five points apiece. Rookie Kristin Schatzlein added six points and two blocks.
 
The Hawks started the game with an 8-2 run which Alexys Vazquez halted with a three-pointer at 15:07. Saint Joseph's responded with an 8-0 run over the next seven minutes to push its lead to 16-5. A three-pointer by senior Katelyn Linney at 7:28 ended Fairfield's eight-minute scoring drought and cut the gap in half. The Stags went cold once more until a Scognamiglio lay-up with 35.6 seconds left in the half; it was the rookie's first collegiate basket.The Hawks held the Stags to the fewest points in a half this season as they took a 24-10 lead into the break. Fairfield shot 19 percent in the stanza, hitting just four of the 21 shots taken, and committed 12 turnovers.
 
Saint Joseph's outscored Fairfield, 13-2, to start the second half with nine of those points coming from Chatilla van Grinsven. The Hawks led by as much as 26 points, 40-14, in the early going. The Stags got into their rhythm midway through the half, cutting into the gap, 42-22, after a pair of three-pointers from Schatzlein and a lay-up by Akon-Akech. At 6:06, Akon-Akech got the deficit under 20 points, 46-28, collecting an offensive rebound and sticking it in for the lay-up. Saint Joseph's fought off the Stags for the 51-38 win.
 
Eleven of the 12 Hawks that checked into the game scored with van Grinsven leading the way with nine points to go along with nine boards.
 
Fairfield will face Wagner College in the consolation game of the Hawk Classic tomorrow, December 29, at 12pm at Hagan Arena.
