FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's basketball team won their fifth consecutive game by topping St. Francis Brooklyn, 52-43, this afternoon at Alumni Hall. Senior
Katelyn Linney and junior
Alexys Vazquez combined for seven three-pointers on the day.
Linney finished with 14 points, which included four three-pointers, and five rebounds while Vazquez finished with 11 points, hitting three trifectas and a pair of free throws. Junior
Katie Cizynski just missed a double-double finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds while tying a career-best with four assists.
Fairfield got going early as three three-pointers by Vazquez and Linney put the Stags on top 11-2. St. Francis quickly closed the gap and Sarah Benedetti put the Terriers ahead, 14-11, with a three at the 6:08 mark.
After the Stags went cold from the floor for an eight minute stretch, senior
Laura Vetra ended the scoring drought at 3:01 with a jumper. Vazquez then pulled Fairfield within 18-16 with a three at 2:23. With the clock winding down, Vetra put home a pass from Cizynski to move the Stags within 22-20 heading into halftime.
A quick foul by the Stags to start the second half led to a pair of St. Francis free throws at 19:47 and 24-20 advantage for the Terriers. Fairfield chipped away at the deficit and
Felicia DaCruz delivered the equalizer at 17:45 with a lay-in. Vazquez then drained a three-pointer at 16:51 to put Fairfield on top 29-26.
St. Francis regained the lead, 34-33, at 12:34 but Cizynski successfully converted a three-point play 17 seconds later to put the Stags ahead, 36-34. Fairfield pushed its lead to 45-38 on a bucket by
Brittany Obi-Tabot at the 3:39 mark. With 33 seconds left on the clock, Vazquez essentially iced the win with a pair of free throws to make the score 47-40. Senior
Brittany MacFarlane hit three free throws while DaCruz netted a pair in the final 23 seconds in the 52-43 win.
Obi-Tabot finished with while DaCruz, MacFarlane, and Vetra each added four points.
Fairfield (5-1) hits the road for a pair of games next week. The Stags stop at Lehigh University on December 6 before traveling to Iowa State University on December 9. Fairfield returns home on December 22 to host LaSalle University at 2pm in Alumni Hall.
