FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- With a number of institutions dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has altered the fall schedules in regards to competition this weekend.
In men's soccer, the four teams that qualified for the 2012 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship have already been determined. The remaining regular season games slated for this weekend were to be played mostly so that the top four teams can finalize their seeds for the champioship. Because of field availability, coaches and student-athlete family issues, travel and safety issues as well as the state of emergencies called by various governing bodies, the athletic administrators boted to cancel all remaining games. Therefore, the Fairfield-Marist match on November 2 and the Fairfield-Siena match on November 4 are cancelled and will not be rescheduled. The MAAC administrators agreed that team standings will be frozen for seeding purposes as based on the results of all games played through October 28.
"In some cases, MAAC campsues are closed until next week because of power or water issues, lack of food services or housing issues," MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor said. "The league priority is to support the recovery efforts, not add to the challenges these communities are facing."
In volleyball, the Fairfield-Rider match on Saturday and the Fairfield-Loyola match on Sunday will be played as scheduled. Both matches will take place in Alumni Hall beginning at 2 pm. Some contests within the conference that are scheduled to be played in the metro New York/New Jersey/Connecticut areas will be rescheduled to Monday, November 5 or Tuesday, November 6, once all campuses are open with full power and heat at their respective facilities. The 2012 MAAC Volleyball Championship will be played on November 17-18 at Alumni Hall on the Fairfield University campus.
The 2012 Women's Soccer Championship, which will be hosted at Marist's Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field, will go on this weekend as scheduled. The first semifinal between second-seeded Fairfield and third-seeded Loyola is set for a 5 pm start on Friday, November 2.
