Women's Basketball Tops Saint Peter's 59-47

The Fairfield University women's basketball team moved to 2-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) by topping Saint Peter's College, 59-47, this evening at the Yanitelli Center. Sophomore Alexys Vazquez had a career-high 15 points for the Stags after going 5-for-9 from three-point range.
 
Fairfield (9-4; 2-0 MAAC) never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 9-2 lead with a trio of three-pointers, including two by Vazquez. The Stags extended their lead to 18-6 at the 12:49 mark on a bucket by Christelle Akon-Akech. After a Saint Peter's lay-in, Vazquez drained back-to-back three pointers to give Fairfield a 24-8 advantage with just under 11 minutes to go in the half. Fairfield took a 31-15 lead into the break.
 
The Peahens (0-13; 0-2 MAAC) came out firing to start the second half, scoring six unanswered points to make it a 10-point game. The Stags broke the scoring drought at 16:47 on a lay-in by Taryn Johnson. Senior Desiree Pina followed with a lay-up up a minute later to make the score 35-21. Katelyn Linney then hit a three-pointer, Fairfield's seventh of the game, to give the Stags a 38-21 lead.
 
Saint Peter's made another comeback late in the second stanza. Kaydine Bent scored seven consecutive points to pull the Peahens within 44-37 with 6:32 left in the game. The Stags responded with a 6-0 run, capped off by a pair of free throws by Akon-Akech at 4:41. Bent cut the deficit to single digits once again with a lay-up at 2:44 to make the score 51-43. A three-pointer by Linney with just under two minutes to play returned the Fairfield lead to double figures, 54-43. Linnney then hit a pair of free throws with 38 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
 
Linney finished with 11 points while Johnson posted 10 points and six rebounds. Akon-Akech tied a career-high with six points to go along with two blocks and three steals.
 
Fairfield continues its MAAC road swing on Saturday, January 7 at Manhattan College at 2pm. The Stags return home on January 9 to host Siena College at 7pm at Alumni Hall.
