Johnson's Double-Double Leads Women's Basketball P

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. –
Senior Taryn Johnson registered her sixth double-double of the season and set a single game record to power the Fairfield University women's basketball team to a 55-43 victory over Canisius College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest at Alumni Hall.

Johnson tied a career high with 22 points and grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds for the Stags (12-5; 5-1 MAAC). The forward went 18-for-24 from the free throw line to set Fairfield's single game record for free throws made. The previous standard was 16 set by former Stag Robin Massari against Iona College during the 1993-94 season. Johnson's 24 attempts are second only to Massari who attempted 25 against the Gaels.

In addition, with her 22 points today, Johnson brought her career total to 998 and is two shy of becoming the 25th Stag in program history, and the second one this season, to score 1,000 points for her career.

Sophomore Alexys Vazquez was also in double figures for Fairfield, tallying 14 points on 4-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc to go along with a pair of free throws.

The Stags forced 16 turnovers, coming up with 11 steals and scoring 20 points off the miscues. Fairfield also out-rebounded Canisius, 35-29. The Stags capitalized on their chances at the free throw line as well, going 24-for-30 on the day.

In the first half, after hauling in an offensive board, sophomore Christelle Akon-Akech found an open Vazquez at the top of the arc who drained the three-pointer to give Fairfield a 16-10 lead at 12:42. The Stags extended their lead to 20-12 at the 10:19 mark on a lay-in by sophomore Katie Cizynski.

A Vazquez three-pointer at 4:51 capped off an 11-2 Fairfield run that spanned four minutes and put the Stags on top, 31-16. Fairfield would take a 33-20 lead into halftime. Vazquez had 11 first half points, going 3-for-4 from three-point land.

Canisius (8-9; 2-4 MAAC) out-scored Fairfield, 8-4, in the opening two minutes of the second half to cut the gap to 35-28. The Stags returned their lead to double figures, 41-30, on a three-pointer by Brittany MacFarlane at 13:56. The Griffs responded with a 6-2 run but Johnson gave the Stags the 46-36 advantage at 6:38 with a free throw. With 4:29 remaining, Vazquez hit her fourth three-pointer of the game to put Fairfield on top 51-39. Fairfield controlled the rest of the way in the 55-43 victory.

MacFarlane had three points and five rebounds. Senior Desiree Pina finished with eight points and five rebounds.

Fairfield, winners of nine of the last 11, takes MAAC play on the road on January 20 at Siena College. The Stags return to Alumni Hall on January 22 to host Niagara at 1pm.
