Field Hockey Wins Third Straight With 2-0 Victory

LEHIGH, Pa. -- Caitlin O'Donnell made six saves while Felicitas Heinen and Hilary Burns each scored a goal, lifting the Fairfield University field hockey team to a 2-0 win over Lehigh University on the road. The win was the third straight for the Stags, improving the team's overall record to 5-2.

The Stags dominated the first half by outshooting the Mountain Hawks by a 13-0 count. Of those shots, one broke through the Lehigh defense to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. After an initial shot was stopped by Lehigh goalkeeper Sierra Segear, Marit Westenberg secured the rebound and sent a pass to Heinen. The freshman beat the goalkeeper high at the 12:02 mark for a 1-0 Fairfield lead.

Lehigh found its offense flow in the second half and began to test the Stags defense. Despite the strong effort, Fairfield was equal to the task. The Mountain Hawks sent 12 shots toward the Stags goal, but O'Donnell was able to keep the home team off the scoreboard. At 42:52, Fairfield picked up a small cushion when Burns converted her shot despite being an odd angle from goal, pushing the lead to 2-0.

The Mountain Hawks made a valiant effort to get back in the game over the final 12 minutes, earning four penalty corners and taking seven shots. But once again, O'Donnell was equal to the task to record her second shutout of the season and the third for the Stags this year.

Fairfield returns to action on September 21 when it hosts Sacred Heart University at University Field.
