PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team put together another solid effort in its opening weekend of compeition, playing its second game in three days. The Stags, which won their opener against Saint Joseph's, came within one goal of another win as well as an upset of a nationally-ranked team. The 18th-ranked Drexel University Dragons held off the Stags in a 2-1 win on Monday afternoon.
The Dragons scored a pair of goals in the first half, both coming in the final 10 minutes of the period. Lindsay McArdle opened the scoring at the 25 minute mark, taking a pass from Monica Baick and pushing the ball past Fairfield goalkeeper

The home team built on the lead with a second goal with no time left on the clock. Ashley Santee set up the scoring chance with a pass to the middle of the circle which found the stick of Christina Conrad. Conrad controlled the pass and hit a shot that caught the corner of the cage.
The Stags broke through for their first goal when they put together a scoring opportunity seven minutes into the half. Fairfield received a penalty corner at the 7:25 mark and made good on the chance.

Faifield could not manage a tying goal over the final 27 minutes resulting in its first loss of the season. O'Donnell kept her teammates in the game by making five saves in 70 minutes of work.
The team returns to action on September 1 when it heads to Siena College for its third road game of the young season. The Stags home opener is set for September 7 against Hofstra University.
