FAIRFIELD, Conn. --
Sarah Minice and
Alli Wigand provided the perfect one-two punch for the Fairfield University softball team this afternoon, as Minice posted both wins in the pitching circle and Wigand hit a two-run homer in both ends of the twinbill. The Stags posted a 3-0 win in the opener and a 4-3 come-from-behind victory in the nightcap.
Minice dominated the first game as she struck out 17 batters, including the first nine outs of the game. She allowed just one hit, a one-out double to Kristin Zito, and allowed only one more base runner the rest of the way. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning
Mikayla Shumate walked to lead off the inning.
She stole second base, but was stranded there as the next two hitters could not advance the runner. It didn't matter though because Wigand launched a two-run homer over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead.
Rae Ball stepped up to the plate and hit a solo home run to complete the back-to-back run for the Stags. Minice made that hold up as she continued to keep control of the game. She struck out the side five times in the game.
In the second game, Niagara jumped out to a 1-0 lead off starter
Rebecca Trott by stroking four singles in its half of the inning. The Stags tied the score in the bottom of the fourth after
Lauren Liseth led off with a single. She advanced to third base on
Kristina Lingo's base hit, putting runners on the corners. Wigand sent home the tying run with a fielder's choice up the middle.
Niagara took the lead in the top of the sixth with back-to-back doubles by Kayla Hines and Becky Zill which pushed the team in front 2-1. Zill came home when Alexis Wayne hit an RBI double that made the score 3-1. Fairfield tied it in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a two-run homer by Wigand, which also scored Lingo who doubled with two outs.
Minice entered the game in the seventh but allowed the first two hitters to reach base on a single and fielder's choice. She retired the next three hitters to end the threat. The Stags won the game in the bottom of the seventh after
Laura Carta singled, went to second on
Kimi Kurata's base hit, and scored on Shumate's single.
The Stags finish the regular season on Sunday against Marist with the opportunity to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season championship. With a sweep of Marist, the Stags would win the title with a 14-2 conference slate, one better than Marist and Iona.
