Minice Fans 13 Hitters In Opener As Softball Split

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Senior Sarah Minice struck out 13 batters and picked up her fourth Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win of the week as the Fairfield University softball team split with Manhattan College on Sunday afternoon. The Stags won the opener by a 3-1 count, but were edged out in the nightcap by a 4-3 margin.

Minice fanned at least two batters in each of the first four innings, including the side in the first. The Stags took the lead in the first Kristin Filicia led off the inning with a single down the left field line, and went to second after Mikayla Shumate's fielder's choice. She eventually came home on a fielder's choice by Lauren Liseth.

The lead doubled to 2-0 in the second inning after Rae Ball opened with a single through the left side. She was retired at second on Tiffany Lawson's fielder's choice. Lawson moved two bases when Kimi Kurata laced a single to put runners on the corner. Filicia played a role in the second run with a double to push the score to 2-0.

Manhattan cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth inning, a rally started with a lead off double by Monica Evangelista. Jaci Rahey followed with a single that allowed Evangelista to scamper home to make the score 2-1. Fairfield answered with a run in the fifth inning with a two-out rally. Shumate singled through the left side and came home after Liseth tripled to right field.

The Jaspers jumped quickly in the second game, plating two runs in the second inning. After retiring the first batter on a strikeout, starter Rebecca Trott yielded a single to Kate Bowen and a two-run homer to Erika Sullivan. Fairfield responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when Laura Carta lofted a sacrifice fly that chased home Alli Wigand.

Manhattan added a run in the top of the third inning, courtesy of a leadoff double by Kristina Walraven. She went to third base following a sacrifice fly and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rahey. The Stags tied the game in the bottom of the inning by putting together three hits. Shumate and Kristina Lingo each registered an RBI single in the inning.

The game was decided in the top of the sixth inning as Melissa Donnelly stroked a one-out single. She went to second on a ground out and came home following a two-out single by Bowen. Sullivan pitched the final three innings to earn her ninth win of the season.

Fairfield picks up the schedule on Thursday when it heads to Quinnipiac University for a single game.
