Softball Drops 5-0 Decision To Sacred Heart At Hom

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Kristen Filicia, Alli Wigand, and Laura Carta each had a base hit as the Fairfield University softball team dropped a 5-0 decision to Sacred Heart University. Five different Sacred Heart student-athletes had at least two hits in the game, with Courtney Lee and Taylor Froelich each recording three hits.

The Pioneers struck first with a run in the top of the first when Jade Bowins hit a line drive over the head of left fielder Tiffany Lawson, resulting in a stand-up triple She came home one batter later after Lee executed a suicide squeeze to the right side of the infield, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Sacred Heart doubled its lead with a run, a rally which started with a one-out single by Froelich. Bowins followed with an infield hit, placing runners at first and second. Lee came through again with an RBI single to left, making the score 2-0.

Fairfield went hitless until the bottom of the third inning with Kristen Filicia placing a base hit past a diving second baseman with two outs. The inning ended when pitcher Nicole Sidor fanned the next hitter.

Sacred Heart's lead went to 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning with Froelich getting things started again with a double down the left field line. She went to third on a passed ball and came home after Bowins grounded out just past the pitcher. The Pioneers broke the game open with two runs in their half of the seventh inning, the big hit coming off the bat Annie Dreher, who lined a two-run single to push the lead to 5-0.

Wigand's hit came in the fourth inning when she registered a two-out single up the middle. The Stags' final hit came from Laura Carta, who was inserted as a pinch hitter with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Fairfield returns to the diamond when it heads to the University of Massachusetts on Thursday evening.
