Men's Basketball Finishes Home Stand Against Rider

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team finishes its four-game home stand by hosting Rider University at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard on Sunday afternoon. The game will tip-off at 3:30 pm and will follow the women's basketball game against Marist College.

The Stags extended their winning streak to six games with a 75-71 win over Iona at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard. Fairfield continues to hold a two-game lead in the MAAC standings with an 11-1 record, with Saint Peter's holding second place at 9-3.

Yorel Hawkins netted a career-high 25 points, including 17 in the second half, in the win against Iona. The senior made 11 of 15 shots from the floor and three of four free throws in the game. Hawkins iced the game with six seconds remaining in the game when he made one of two free throws to push the lead from three points to four points.

The Broncs improved to 16-8 overall and 8-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with its 61-60 victory over Loyola. Freshman Danny Stewart made a free throw with 3.5 seconds remaining to provide the winning margin.

Rider remains one of the top offensive teams in the MAAC, scoring 80 points or more six times this season. The Broncs lead the MAAC in field goal percentage (.473), three-point field goal percentage (.403), and three pointers made (187), while placing second in the MAAC in points per game (72.7) and assists (15.0 apg).

The team has played a majority of its games away from Alumni Gymnasium, making its 15th appearance away from campus. Rider has been very successful on the road, posting an 8-4 road record and a 2-0 neutral site mark. Today's game marks the fourth road game in the last five outings for the Broncs.

Rider boasts three players who score in double figures, beginning with Justin Robinson. He averages a team-high 15.8 points per game, and is by far the program's top three-point threat. He has 64 three pointers in 24 games, and is shooting 44 percent from the arc. Novar Gadson ranks second among his teammates with a 13.0 scoring average. Mike Ringgold is the third Bronc in double digits, netting 12.3 points every forty minutes. Ringgold is the team's top shot blocker with 28 rejections.Derek Needham remains the team's top scorer, checking into today's action with a 13.8 scoring average. He has scored in double figures in all but four games this season. Ryan Olander is next in line with a 10.3 scoring average, while Yorel Hawkins stands at 9.8 points per game. Olander is the team's top rebounder with 7.2 caroms per contest.
