FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team closes out the regular season by heading to Iona College on Sunday afternoon. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 3:30 pm.
The Stags bring a five-game winning streak into today's game and have won 22 of their last 24 games. Fairfield will try to extend its win streak to six games which would be the third time that the Stags have won at least that many in a row this year. Fairfield already has an 11-game win streak and a six-game win streak to its credit this year.
Fairfield will look for its 10th road win today, entering this contest with a 9-3 mark in true road games. The team has also posted two neutral site victories in as many games this season. The Stags have won five straight MAAC road games since dropping a one-point decision at Loyola in early January.
Fairfield stands fifth in the NCAA Division I scoring defense stats, allowing 58.0 points per game. Stephen F. Austin leads the nation by allowing 55.6 points per game, while Wisconsin is second at 57.4 points per contest.Alabama holds third place with 57.9 points per game game, while Old Dominion moved into fourth place by allowing 58.0 points every forty minutes.
Needham leads the team in scoring with a 14.2 scoring average, which also places sixth among the MAAC scoring leaders. Ryan Olander is next in line with a 10.6 scoring average. He averages a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game.
Yorel Hawkins is netting 10.0 points every forty minutes.
The Gaels look to extend their winning streak to seven games and lock down the number two seed in the MAAC tournament with a win today. Iona took a big step toward that second-place finish with a 79-59 win at Saint Peter's on Friday night.
Junior Scott Machado leads the nation in assists, dishing off 7.6 per game. Machado holds a slight edge over Aaron Johnson from UAB (7.5 apg). Mike Glover is also in the national statistics, placing eighth in field goal percentage (60.6 percent) and 12th with 15 double-doubles.
Iona defeated Saint Peter's by a double-digit margin, the fifth time in its current six-game winning streak in which the Gaels have won a game by 10 or more points. The lone exception was a four-point win against Siena at home (69-65). The Gaels are tough to beat at home, posting a 10-2 mark at the Hynes Center.
Mike Glover leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 18.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Scott Machado and Kyle Smyth are also scoring in double figures with 13.7 points and 10.5 points per game, respectively. Machado also has an impressive 2-to-1 assist to turnover ratio with 219 assists and 101 turnovers in 29 starts.
