The Fairfield University women's basketball team dropped a 60-52 decision to visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Siena College Monday night at Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard. The loss drops the Stags to 17-10 overall and 10-6 in league play, while the Saints improve to 12-14 on the year and 10-6 in conference action.
Fairfield rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to knot the score 38-38 with 8:10 to play in the game. Siena answered with four straight points, but
Laura Vetra (Riga, Latvia) drained a three-pointer with 6:26 to play to get the Stags back within a point, 42-41. Siena scored the next 10 points to open their largest lead of the game, 52-41, with just over four minutes to play.
Brittany MacFarlane (Hamilton, Ontario) ended the Saints run as she was fouled knocking down a three-pointer in the corner. She made the ensuing free throw to get the Stags back within seven points, 52-45, with 3:20 remaining, but they would get no closer.
Katelyn Linney (Freehold, N.J.) led the Stags with 17 points hitting 8-16 from the floor, as well as pulling down five rebounds.
Desiree Pina (Unionville, Conn.) hit 4-4 at the line as she notched 13 points to go along with three assists. Fairfield shot 37.7 percent from the field for the game, hitting 4-13 from behind the arc, and had four assists. The Stags committed only 11 turnovers, while forcing 16 from the Saints, leading to an 18-11 margin in points off of turnover. Vetra tallied seven points and a team-high seven rebounds in the game.
For the first time this season a MAAC foe outrebounded the Stags as Siena finished with a 36-27 edge on the glass. Both teams had 12 offensive caroms, with Fairfield holding a 12-8 edge in second chance points.
The Stags jumped out to a 4-0 lead with baskets from Linney and MacFarlane in the opening two minutes of play. Fairfield's lead remained four points3:03 later when Pina knocked down her first basket of the game to make it 6-2. Siena scored the next five points, taking its first lead of the game, 7-6, on a Cristina Centeno basket with 12:29 to play in the half. Johnson gave the Stags the lead right back on the next possession, scoring in the paint, and hit the ensuing free throw for a 9-7 advantage.
The scored would be tied three times from 9-9 with midway through the half through a 13-13 tie on a
Laura Vetra (Riga, Lativa) basket with 7:54 to play in the half. Centeno would knock down a three-pointer on the Saints next possession to start a 9-2 run that gave the Saints a 22-15 lead. Fairfield would get no closer than five points the rest of the half and the Saints went to the locker room up seven, 28-21.
Serena Moore led all scorers and rebounders with a 27-point, 15-rebound double-double, while blocking three shots. Centeno had 11 points as did Maja Gerlyng, as the Saints shot 45.7 percent from the field and 15-20 at the stripe.
The Stags return to action on Friday night when they travel to Riverdale, N.Y. to take on Manhattan College at 7 p.m.
