STORRS, Conn. –
The Fairfield University women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped as the Stags fell to No. 2 University of Connecticut, 93-40, this evening at Gampel Pavilion.
 
Fairfield (7-4) was led by senior Desiree Pina who scored 12 points on 5-for-12 shooting. Sophomore Alexys Vazquez posted nine points, knocking down three three-pointers which tied a career high. Junior Brittany MacFarlane tied a season-high with eight points while blocking two shots.
 
UConn (10-2) received a 22-point from Stefanie Dolson while Tiffany Hayes posted 23 points and five rebounds. Three other Huskies were in double figures, including Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Brianna Banks who each had 12 points. Bria Hartley finished with 10 points.
 
The Huskies scored the first eight points of the game, which included six by Dolson. Pina put Fairfield on the board at 16:53 with a jumper. Junior Katelyn Linney then hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc to pull the Stags within 8-5 at 15:24. Dolson stopped the 5-0 Fairfield run with a hook shot in the lane at 15:01. A three-pointer by Vazquez at 13:43 pulled Fairfield within 10-8, but UConn went on a 12-0 run over the next four minutes. UConn took a 49-20 lead into half time.
 
UConn began the second half on a 15-4 run over the first seven minutes of the half and never looked back.
 
The loss is Fairfield's largest margin of defeat since the 2001-02 when the Stags fell to Penn State University, 88-37.
 
Fairfield opens the New Year and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on January 2 when the Stags host Iona College at 7pm in Alumni Hall.
