Women's Basketball Tops St. Francis 53-30 To Win T

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – Three Stags scored in double figures as the Fairfield University women's basketball team downed St. Francis College, 53-30, this evening at the Pope Physical Education Center. The Stags won their third straight game to improve to 6-3 this season.
 
Junior Katelyn Linney tallied 13 points, including three three-pointers, to lead all scorers. Senior Taryn Johnson just missed a double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Katie Cizynski scored 11 points.
 
Senior Desiree Pina added eight points on 4-for-7 shooting, six assists, three steals, and four rebounds for the Stags.
 
The Stags began the game with a 17-7 run that spanned the first eight minutes of the contest. The Terriers (1-9) countered, holding the Stags scoreless for the next 4:07 while cutting the gap to 17-15. Linney broke the drought at 8:21 with her third three-pointer of the game while Pina hit a jumper 30 seconds later to make the score 22-15.
 
Fairfield returned its lead to double digits, 30-18, on a three-pointer by Cizynski from the top of the arc at 5:20. Pina gave the Stags a 14-point lead, 32-18, sinking a shot at 4:34. Fairfield would head into halftime with a 32-21 advantage.
 
The Stags stormed out of the break, using an 18-2 run to start the second half and open up a 50-23 lead. Katie Fox broke an eight-minute scoring drought for the Terriers by nailing a three-pointer at 8:38. Fairfield controlled the rest of the way.
 
Fairfield had a season-low six turnovers while St. Francis committed 21 turnovers. The Stags also had eight steals.

Alexys Vazquez chipped in with six points and three assists while Brittany MacFarlane had five rebounds on the night.

Fairfield will break for final exams and return to action on December 22 when they travel to LaSalle for a 2pm tip-off. The Stags then head to No. 2 UConn on December 29.
