HAMDEN, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's basketball team fell to Quinnipiac University 64-55 this afternoon in a non-league contest at the TD Bank Sports Center.
Senior
Desiree Pina led the Stags with 16 points, nine rebounds, and tied a career-high with six assists. Senior
Taryn Johnson tallied 14 points, six rebounds, three blocks, and three steals for the Stags (2-2).
Quinnipiac (1-2) opened the game on a 7-0 run and shot nearly 50 percent from the field in the early going. Fairfield then turned up the defensive pressure and held the Bobcats scoreless for the next seven minutes as the Stags surged back on the offensive end.
Junior
Brittany MacFarlane tied the game 17-17 with three-pointer at 8:08. Felicia Barron broke Quinnipiac's scoring drought with a jumper at 5:18 but
Christelle Akon-Akech tied it, 19-19, with a lay-up.
Katelyn Linney gave the Stags the 22-19 lead with a three-pointer with just under three minutes to play while junior
Laura Vetra extended the lead to five points at the 1:33 mark. The Bobcats answered with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 24-24 with 49 seconds left. Shaina Earle then hit a three-pointer with 10 ticks remaining in the half to send Quinnipiac into the break with a 27-24 lead.
Quinnipiac went on 14-2 run coming out of halftime to extend its lead to 41-26. Fairfield's first field goal of the half came at 11:34 on a basket by MacFarlane. Quinnipiac would go ahead by as much as 17 points midway through the frame. The Stags began to chip away at the lead as Pina cut the lead to nine points with 1:34 remaining. She then hit a pair of free throws with 52 seconds left to pull the Stags within eight but it was not enough.
MacFarlane finished with seven points while Linney added five points for the Stags.
Quinnipiac's Brittany McQuain led all players with 19 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double. Barron tallied 11 points and six assists before fouling out.
Fairfield returns to action on November 30 when it travels to Brown University for a 5pm start. The Stags return to Providence, R.I. for the Brown Classic, December 3-4, where they will face Providence College and the University of Rhode Island.
