Field Hockey Ends Season with Overtime Loss to Bos

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team finished their 2011 season and celebrated senior day with one of the most exciting games of the year.  After going into overtime and battling right with the No. 18 Terriers, the Stags were defeated by Boston University 3-2.

Although Boston maintained possession and outshot Fairfield in the first half 15-1, it was that one shot the Stags needed to begin the scoring in the first half.  At the 22:28 mark, senior and co-captain Leah Furey, assisted by Felicitas Heinen, netted the first goal of the game to put Fairfield up 1-0.  Fans could feel the energy pick up from that point on.  Just six minutes later, Boston struck with their first goal to tie the game at one a piece.  Senior back Kate Murphy had the goal and was assisted by Kat Spring after a penalty corner was taken.

The score held until ten minutes into the second period when Terrier Nicole van Oosterom received the ball from Macey Gaumond and put it past Maddy Sposito with a backhand shot at the five yard line.  As Boston fought to keep their lead, senior and co-captain Marit Westenberg tied it up once again at two apiece.  Freshman Heinen earned her second assist on the day after a Fairfield penalty corner was taken.

With just seven players on the field in overtime each team was fighting with all they had, as the Stag seniors knew this would be their final game of their careers at Fairfield and Boston was fighting for the conference title.  The final goal of the game came right at the 79:00 mark.  For her first career goal, Ysi Schieb of Boston deflected a shot by Jacinda McLeod to end the game and give the Terriers the victory and the America East regular season title.

Fairfield goalkeepers Caitlin O'Donnell and Sposito both saw playing time today.  O'Donnell started the game and played the first 17 minutes earning four saves, while Sposito had nine saves on the day with just over 60 minutes of play at the net.  The Stags displayed remarkable defense after allowing just three goals on a total of 31 shots by the Terriers.  Fairfield's offense also ended the season on a high note by making each of their nine shots count against the highly praised Boston University defense.

Fairfield field hockey led by head coach Jackie Kane ends their season with a 9-8 record, 1-4 in the America East.
