NEW BRITAIN, Conn. –
Senior Michelle Yoshida broke her own program record while several other Stags had outstanding efforts for the Fairfield University men's and women's swimming & diving teams as they opened action at the Central Connecticut State Blue Devil Duals this evening.
 
Yoshida captured the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:06.60, breaking her own program record by nearly four seconds. Her previous best was 2:10.14 which she recorded in October 2009. She was also the runner-up in the 50y free, clocking a time of 24.84 seconds; Yoshida was edged by CCSU's Helene Neuhaus who had the winning time of 24.74 seconds in the event.
 
On the men's side, Fairfield took the top three spots in the 50y freestyle, with rookie Tyler Conley winning in 21.97 seconds. Senior Brendan Sarpu was second in 22.97 seconds while freshman Doug Leclair was third in 24.02 seconds.
 
Fairfield also took the top three spots in the men's 500y freestyle, with sophomore Cody Parker posting a winning time of 5:00.39. Sophomore Kevin Greener was the runner-up in 5:00.74 while freshman Chris Weaver was third in 5:15.93.
 
Senior Brian Friedlander won the 200y breaststroke in a time of 2:13.93 while freshman Kevin Kett was third in 2:24.00. In the 200y back, senior Kenny Muti was the runner-up in 2:07.40 while junior Andrew Hiss was third in 2:08.70. Freshman Brett Borgognone took third in the 200y fly with a time of 2:07.08.
 
The 200y freestyle relay of Sarpu, Parker, Conley, and Leclair notched a winning time of 1:29.66. The 800y freestyle relay of Conley, Leclair, Parker and Borgognone posted a time of 7:30.37 to finish in second place.
 
On the boards, freshman Joe Dowling won the 1-meter with a personal best of 214.45. Freshman Evan Barr was the runner-up with a score of 196.75 while junior Ryan Krebs was third with a mark of 176.80. Freshman Will Sullivan posted a score of 146.65 to set a personal best. In her collegiate debut, freshman Lauren Kemple placed third on the women's 1-meter, posting a score of 148.60.
 
In the women's 200y fly, junior Cacky Keating placed fourth with a time of 2:15.80. Sophomore Margaret Osmulski was fifth in the 500y free with a time of 5:23.09. Sophomore Suzy Lawlor took sixth in the 200y breaststroke clocking a time of 2:37.37.
 
The Stags placed third in both women's relay events. In the 200y freestyle relay, Osmulski, Emily Pedrick, Keating and Yoshida posted a time of 1:42.25. The quartet teamed up for the 800y freestyle, finishing in 8:03.98.
 
Fairfield continues action at the Blue Devil Duals tomorrow, October 15, beginning at 11am.
