Men's Basketball Takes On Canisius Monday Night In

Game Notes

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team puts its four-game winning streak on the line when it hosts Canisius College on Monday night at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard. The game will start at 7:30 pm and will be broadcasted on the MSG Network.

The Stags currently hold first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with a 9-1 conference record. Fairfield will play the second of four consecutive home games on Monday, opening the home stand with a win over Manhattan College last Friday. Derek Needham's three-point shot with 8.7 seconds remaining was the difference in the 61-59 victory.

The Stags remain the number two team in the nation for scoring defense at 54.8 points in the last set of NCAA statistics (games through January 27). Stephen F. Austin (53.7 ppg), leads the nation in that category. Fairfield remains number one in the MAAC statistics for scoring defense, rebounding margin and scoring margin.

Derek Needham remains the team's top scorer, checking into today's action with a 14.0 scoring average. He has scored in double figures in all but three games this season. Ryan Olander is next in line with a 10.0 scoring average, while Yorel Hawkins stands at 8.5 points per game. Olander is the team's top rebounder with 7.3 caroms per contest.

For Canisius, Julius Coles scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Golden Griffs over Niagara by a 69-54 score in front of a sold-out crowd at Koessler Athletic Center. Greg Logins registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Canisius improved to 10-10 overall and 4-6 in MAAC play.

Logins has enjoyed a great deal of success recently, including a 30-point night in the Golden Griffs victory over Iona. The senior became the first Canisius student-athlete to reach the 30-point mark since Corey Herring netted 32 markers against Fairfield during the 2005-06 campaign.

Sophomore Gaby Bellardo is the team's leading scorer overall (11.3 ppg) and in MAAC play (13.7 ppg) this season. He tallied the game-winning basket against Iona last Friday with 3.2 seconds remaining in the game. It was the rookie's second game winner this season,
