Pina's 16 Paces Stags To 63-52 Home Win Over Canis

The Fairfield University women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 63-52 win over visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Canisius College at Alumni Hall. The win improves the Stags overall record to 11-6 and their league record to 4-3, while the Griffs fall to 6-12 on the year and 2-5 in league play.
Fairfield never trailed in the game, which was tied five times in the first 5:56 of action, the last time at 12-12. Katelyn Linney (Freehold, N.J.) drained her first of three three-pointers at the 13:37 mark to spark a 7-0 Fairfield run that put them ahead 19-12 with 11:16 to play. Canisius scored the next four points to get within three points, 19-16 (8:04), but could get no closer as the Stags finished the half on a 13-4 run that gave them a 32-22 halftime lead. Fairfield shot 56.0 percent from the field in the opening half of play, 14-25, including 4-10 from behind the arc, while committing just six turnovers.
Canisius scored first in the second-half to get back within eight points, but would have the margin in single-digits for less than five minutes of action in the second-half, and were no closer than seven points, 35-28 (14:07) the remainder of the way. Ashley Durham (Millville, N.J.) made a runner in the paint to get Canisius within eight points, 51-43 with 4:30 to play. On the Stags next possession Taryn Johnson (Brockton, Mass.) turned a Brittany MacFarlane (Hamilton, Ontario) offensive rebound into a basket in the paint and a 53-43 advantage. Joelle Nawrocki (Unionville, Conn.) converted a conventional three-point play at the 3:08 mark and drained a three-point field goal with 2:27 to play to give the Stags a 16-point edge, 2:27.
The Stags had four players finish in double figures, led by the 16 points of Desire Pina (Plainville, Conn.). Pina was 6-6 at the stripe and had four steals in her 36 minutes of action. Johnson tallied 13 points and a game-high four assists, while Linney added 11 points. Katie Cizynski (Southbury, Conn.) played 19 minutes off of the bench and hit 5-6 from the field for 10 points.
Canisius was paced Jamie Ruttle (Burlington, Ontario) who scored a game-high 18 points and added a team-best six rebounds. Durham also finished in double-figures, with 12 points. The Griffs finished the game shooting 37.7 percent from the field and were 4-15 from behind the arc.
The Stags shot 50.0 percent for the game, while knocking down 7-15 from behind the arc and hit 8-12 at the free throw line. The Stags had 14 assists against only 11 turnovers, while the Griffs also committed only 11 turnovers in the game. Neither team attempted a free throw in the first-half of play.
The Stags are back in action on Sunday, January 23 when they host MAAC foe Niagara. The game, set for 1 p.m., is to be played at Alumni Hall.
