MacFarlane's Double-Double Not Enough In 54-46 Los

Loudonville, N.Y. –  The Fairfield University women's basketball team saw it six-game w in streak snapped 54-46 by Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) host Siena College Monday night. The loss dropped the Stags to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Saints improve to 6-8 on the season and 4-0 in conference action.
Desiree Pina (Plainville, Conn.) tied the score 32-32 with 7:59 to play, helping the Stags rally from a 23-17 halftime deficit, but Fairfield could not take the lead.   Siena scored on its next three possessions to build a 38-32 advantage that it would not relinquish. The Saints would lead by as many as nine points, 47-38 on a Serena Moore basket with 2:08 to play in the game. 
The Stags would mount a furious rally from that point, with an 8-3 run to close within four points, 50-46 with 46.6 seconds to play. Katelyn Linney (Freehold, N.J.), who scored all 11 of her points in the second-half, drained a pair of three-pointers during the run, but the Saints knocked down 7-10 from the line in the final 73 seconds to secure the win.
Brittany MacFarlane (Hamilton, Ontario) led the Stags with her first career double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down a career-best 13 rebounds. She also handed out two assists in her career-high 35 minutes of action. Linney scored a team-high 11 points, with three three-pointer, while Laura Vetra (Riga, Latvia) added 10 points off o f the bench. Joelle Nawrocki (Unionville, Conn.) finished with seven points and a team-best four assists, while Pina recorded four points, five rebounds and three assists..
Fairfield shot 31 percent from the field on the game, hitting just 6-29 from behind the arc, while Siena shot 48.7 percent from the line with a 4-6 effort from downtown. Siena hit 12-17 from the free throw line in the game, while the Stags – who did not get to the stripe until after halftime, were 4-8. Fairfield had 12 assists and 10 turnovers, while Siena finished with seven assists and 15 turnovers.
Vetra knocked down a three-pointer at the 8:24 mark to give the Stags a 15-11, equaling their largest margin of the first-half. It would prove to be the Stags last basket for nearly seven minutes however, as the Saints scored 12 of the last 14 points of the half. Maja Gerlyng scored four straight points, knotting the score 15-15 with 7:34 remaining in the half. Cristina Centeno put the Saints ahead with a lay-up on the Saints next possession. She would be the next player to score for either team, 3:27 later, to put the Saints up 20-15. MacFarlane ended the Stags scoring drought with a basket in the paint with 99 seconds to play in the half, before Centeno ended the half hitting 3-4 at the line for a 23-17 halftime Siena lead.
The Saints were led by the 19-point effort of Centeno, who hit 5-7 from the field and 6-8 at the line. Moore added 15 points while Gerlyng finished with 11 points. Cathy Cockrum had a team-high eight rebounds as well as four assists.
The Stags play on the road for the fourth time in five outings when they travel to Loyola for a Friday contest at Loyola. The 4:30 p.m. game will air live on ESPNU with Doug Sherman and Kayte Christensen calling the action.
