Men's Soccer Posts 1-0 Win Over Loyola

Box Score
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Dan Shaw scored the game's only goal with under a minute remaining in the first half, and the Stags defense made that score stand as the Fairfield University soccer team posted a 1-0 decision over Loyola University at Lessing Field.

In the opening half, Fairfield came out early and set up a couple scoring chances in the opening minutes. Nuno Rodrigues and Dan Shaw each put a shot toward goal, but the attempts sailed wide of the goal on those two opportunities.

The Greyhounds looked like they would take the lead when Danny Ankrah sent a ball into the box over the heads of two Fairfield defenders. Stephen Dooley was wide open and put a header back toward goal, but the ball caromed off the cross bar and back into play. Adam Cowen was waiting for the rebound and cleared the ball from danger.

The game remained scoreless until the final minute when the Stags put together one final attack before halftime. Shane Kurtz, who came off the bench just minutes earlier, ran down a ball on the right side of the box. He pushed the ball back toward the goal, but the ball was deflected back toward the top of the box. Shaw controlled the loose ball and hit a hard shot to the lower right corner which goalkeeper Thurman Van Riper put his hands on. However, the momentum of the ball carried into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead with 46 seconds remaining.

Loyola pushed the ball forward for most of the second half, outshooting the Stags by a 6-0 count. But Fairfield dropped back and defended well against all Loyola attacks and counters. O'Keeffe made six saves in the half and made several aggressive plays on crosses that kept Loyola off the scoreboard.

The Stags finish up the regular season when they host Rider University on Sunday, November 7 at Lessing Field. The team's 11 seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
