JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- The men's soccer team surrended a goal in each half which resulted in a 2-0 loss to Saint Peter's College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game. The loss drops Fairfield's overall record to 4-7-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Both teams applied equal pressure during the first half, with the Peacocks ending the half with a slight edge in shots at 8-5. However, it was one Saint Peter's shot late in the first half that caused damage. After a Fairfield player was whistled for a foul, the Peacocks were awarded a free kick about 20 yards from goal. Harry Newman stepped into the ball and released a shot that caught the corner of the goal for a 1-0 Saint Peter's advantage.
The Peacocks doubled their advantage nine minutes into the second half, a play which started with Newman. He carried the ball down the center of the field before sending a pass to Lebogana Pila who was stationed on the right side of the box. Pila sent a shot toward goal that beat goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe at 53:55.
The Stags had their opportunities in the second half, taking 14 shots in the final 45 minutes. But, Peacock goalkeeper Carlos Suarez made eight saves to record the shutout. O'Keeffe made four saves for the Stags.
Fairfield finishes up the regular season with a pair of home games next weekend, hosting Loyola University on November 5 followed by Rider University on November 7. The game against Rider will include the annual senior ceremony, honoring the class of 2011 prior to the kick off.
